The dragon symbolises the City of London and this one decorates an arch over the Grand Avenue passing beneath Smithfield Market. Smithfield is the largest dead meat market in the UK. The building - designed by Horace Jones, who also built Tower Bridge - is a splendidly colourful Victorian set piece.
