Image description: Aerial prospect of central Oxford (looking east) and Balliol College with towers in middle distance, University of Oxford, Oxford, (River Thames), Oxfordshire.

Balliol College was founded c. 1266 by John de Balliol as a penance for insulting the Bishop of Durham. Much of the college was rebuilt 1869-77 by Alfred Waterhouse (when he also began building London's Natural History Museum).
