Image description: Maidenhead road bridge (1772-77), River Thames, Buckinghamshire.
A wooden bridge was built here before 1255, when Henry III issued a road widening order. Being one day's journey from London, and suddenly on the main road to Bristol, the village rapidly expanded with coaching inns, stabling, veterinarians, blacksmiths and four breweries. Today it appears to have regained some of its quietude.
