These photographs form part of the London Image Collection and cover the heart of the City of London, centering on Bank, and areas extending northwards to the Barbican arts and residential living complex.
These City pages contain pictures covering a wide range of subject matter, including: the dragon-topped steeple of St Mary-Le-Bow ('Bow Church' - the church of Bow Bells); the Monument (Wren's massive column commemorating the Great Fire of London); details from the roofline of the Guildhall complex and Royal Exchange; and the 'pointy end' of James Stirling's No. 1 Poultry building (with and without blurred passers-by and gesturing shadow). There are also some images of red buses in motion and stone reliefs of William Shakespeare, Christopher Wren, Oliver Cromwell and Samuel Pepys outside the Guildhall Art Gallery.
There are a host of interesting signs and plaques in the City. Those included here concern: London double-decker bus advertising; the original 'Stocks Market'; London's first Coffee House (now the Old Jamaica wine bar); an ale and eating house (converted from a bank); and fierce heraldic dragon installed at Bank underground station. Also depicted are examples of sign-writing and motifs within Leadenhall Market, and some of the signage suspended over Lombard Street.
Images of the Barbican (Barbican Centre) include aspects of: the Shakespeare Tower; waterside flats of Lakeside Terrace; The Lake with balcony gardens of Gilbert Terrace behind; waterfalls and gardens before Brandon Mews and Willoughby House; and the marvellous golden figures holding comedy (and tragedy) at the head of Gilbert Bridge.
