These photographs form part of the London Image Collection and cover aspects of London Docklands and its redevelopment – an ever-expanding modern / postmodern urban envrironment marked by new architectural icons built on the edges of the deep-water docks excavated in the 18th century to handle Britain's thriving overseas trade. Skyscrapers constructed around Canary Wharf, Heron Quays and West India Quay include One Canada Square (architect Cesar Pelli), the HSBC Tower (architect Foster and Partners), Barclay's Tower and the Citigroup Centre (architect Cesar Pelli).
You will also find pictures of the landscaped gardens and expansive public spaces dotted with curious sculpture (especially the Traffic Light Tree at Westferry Circus) and a forest of clocks on posts. From the southern end of the Isle of Dogs come images of Millwall Dock – with sailing and pleasure boats overlooked by modern residential developments. There are views of Canary Wharf office towers reflected in the Blackwall Basin and images of Dutch barges and houseboats before skyscrapers – which contrast alternative lifestyles with international finance, banking and business; traditional floating craft with thrusting English Hi-Tech architecture.
