These photographs form part of the London Image Collection and cover details of Trafalgar Square, Piccadilly Circus, Piccadilly, Mayfair and their neighbourhoods.
The Trafalgar Square pictures include Nelson's Column, Landseer's famous lion statues - some with tourists larking about on them - and Lutyens' remodelled fountains. (Tourists feeding pigeons in Trafalgar Square are now off the agenda).
Piccadilly images include the statue of Eros (the Art Nouveau Angel of Christian Charity) in Piccadilly Circus and the dramatic golden statues of three female nudes diving from the roofline over Haymarket.
The Mayfair images consist in views in and around the intimate streets and covered passageways of Shepherd Market: Ye Grapes pub (and man with a pint of beer reading and enjoying the sun before it); outdoor restaurants; and people in motion and silhouette.
Further photographs in the vicinity of Trafalgar Square and Piccadilly depict: Admiralty Arch; the Ritz hotel at dusk; the neon frontage of The Playhouse theatre; the Royal Society of Arts building viewed from the Strand; Carlton House Terrace (incorporating the Royal Society, The Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining, and The Royal College of Pathologists, amongst others); and a lampost before impressive scaffholding sheets above Regent Street.
