These photographs form part of the River Thames Image Collection and depict the 'middle' region of the Thames stretching downstream from Oxford around Abingdon, through Appleford, Clifton Hampden, Dorchester Wallingford, Moulsford, Goring and Streatley, Pangbourne and Reading, to Sonning.
The hotel above is the French Horn – a luxury hotel and restaurant overlooking a backwater of the River Thames opposite Sonning. The pleasure craft are also on the Thames at Sonning: photograph of a narrowboat and a motor cruiser negotiating the tight low arch of Sonning Bridge. The narrowboats before trees are on the Thames above Sonning lock on the very outskirts of Reading.
The vertical water level guage on the side of Mapledurham Lock has high water flood markers for the years 1894, 1947 and 2003.
