These photographs form part of the River Thames Image Collection and cover the city of Oxford. They depict University of Oxford college buildings, Alice's Shop, Wren's Sheldonian Theatre, punts and people punting, rowing skiffs and students rowing, the University of Oxford Botanic Garden, street scenes, pub signs, the University church and pretty cottages along the River Thames.
Images include: the Bodleian Library entranceway (with tour group and woman in traditional Japanese dress) and doorway details of the 17c Old Schools Quadrangle; 15c former Divinity School and its spectacular vaulted ceiling (one Oxford location of many used in the Harry Potter films); Christ Church College (ivy and window details, bowler-hatted porters, general views across Christ Church Meadow, and Meadow Cottages); Magdalene College (grotesque carvings, detail of roofline and the college's chapel Tower); Trinity College; and Balliol College (from above).
Photographs of Oxford street scenes include: students larking about celebrating the completion of second year exams outside The King's Arms; pub and bookshop signs; views of High Street (with Brasenose College in foreground); St Mary's Church (with cherry blossom); the colourful buildings of Oriel Street; the Alice Shop and sign (featured in Lewis Carroll's Through the Looking Glass and immensely popular with tourists); and Blackwell's book shop on Broad Street with blurred passers-by. There are also some golden late afternoon images of the Roman-inspired Sheldonian Theatre (Christopher Wren's first project, built 1663-69) and details of the marvellous busts mounted on its front railing plinths.
There are miscellaneous images of the University of Oxford Botanic Garden, its entry gate (with magnolia in bloom) and a view of Magdalene's Tower through the glass roof of its orchid house. Founded in 1621, this is Britain's oldest botanic garden.
Finally, there are many pictures here of sport and leisure activities on the River Thames: college rowers before a pretty hump-backed bridge (singles, doubles, cox and eight); people punting (and being punted) on the river; a pattern of dozens of punts tied up at a dock; row boats; and long punt-like peddle boats. Near Folley Bridge are photos of a colourful line of riverside cottages with pedestrians on the tow path in the foreground, and the very popular Head of the River Hotel with crowds of young people drinking and enjoying the sun at its outdoor tables.
