These photographs form part of the River Thames Image Collection and cover the Thames from above Windsor & Eton to Weybridge – a still surprisingly rural stretch of the river – including pictures of the River Wey, Boveney, Chertsey, Shepperton and Shepperton Lock.
Find images of the Thames riverside at Windsor Bridge: a hotel boat (barge) at Windsor moorings; the newly developed Eton riverfront with restaurant and modern apartments; Eton high street viewed through a folly magnifying glass sculpture.
Above Windsor, around Boveney, are depicted the riverside Chapel of St Mary Magdalene, a Tudor farmhouse framed by cut field, chestnut trees and sky, and a sculptural National Cycle Network sign.
Photographs of Chertsey include: people fishing above Chertsey Bridge; the Kingfisher Inn; and narrowboats and cruisers approaching Chertsey Lock.
Shepperton images include: the picturesque King's Head pub and sign; a Monet-like scene of turquoise rowboat beside a dock; detail of a narrowboat moored on a riverbank; boats entering Shepperton Lock; the lock keepers cabin; and the lock's water level guage protruding from the Thames.
The Weybridge area images include: Thames Lock – first lock on the River Wey navigation – with narrowboats entering and leaving the lock and various details of lockside signs and landscaping; and a red narrowboat motoring up the lush River Wey viewed from above. From the town of Weybridge are pictures of The Ship Hotel (an old coaching inn) and St James parish church and its graveyard.
