In
establishing the jimbatty.com image library, I bring together over 20years
of experience in both travel/pictorial photography and corporate design for
print and the internet.
For the past five years I have focused my attention on building the collection of photographs you find here concerning London, the River Thames and narrowboats on England's inland waterways.
Born and raised in Canada, I was first seduced by London in 1982 and have lived here ever since. London is the most exciting city in the world in a large part because it is a city that changes. In that time it has visually (and politically and socially) changed enormously and it continues to do so - most dramatically expressed in the development of Docklands, the City, Bankside and the South Bank.
I draw on an intimate and expanding knowledge of London and I take inspiration from the historically rich and beautiful countryside on the city's doorstep and along the River Thames. The Thames is one of the most interesting and accessible of river routes whether you follow it on foot, by cycle, or by 'simply messing about in boats'. Uncountable journeys have been made along every mile of this great river and through its towns and villages to produce these images. A good number of the images have been taken from a kayak.
Not represented here, but available through enquiry, are photographs of central France that reflect a long love affair with this vast, spectacular, volcanic, remote, pious, medieval, modern and resourceful region.
Previous personal projects include documenting aspects of Pakistan, Xinjiang in the Chinese far west, and Northeast Thailand.
My design work includes a wide variety of promotional and communication materials and publications for software developers, management consultants and engineering and town planning consultants firms.
In 2002, I was awarded an MPhil in Philosophy from Birkbeck College, University of London for my thesis An Intentional Understanding of Photographs, as well as research into aesthetics and ethics.
I enjoy travel writing and have had a couple of dozen illustrated travel articles published in various magazines and newletters. Look for an article about photographing dragons in the City of London in LeCool's London guidebook later in 2008.
